Originally, this bird occurs in France, large parts of Spain and the Balearic Islands and Italy, but there are populations in southern Britain, Ireland, Greece, Algeria and New Zealand. An adult has a red beak, red eye ring and red legs and lives in fields, marshes, and (low) hills, eating seeds, leaves and insects. In Spain they are often bred and released for hunting.
