Little Owl (Athene noctua) – size 8 – 9 inches, wingspan 19 – 22 inches
Birds and birding Spain. The Little Owl is a small owl with a thick-set appearance and bright yellow eyes. Their round heads and thick feathers make them looks bigger than they are, with the females generally slightly larger than males, though their plumage is almost identical. Both sexes are therefore indistinguishable from each other. The owl can be seen resting on poles, rocks or dead branches, and in the Refugio Marnes area they can be seen on phone lines, and fairly frequently observed in the late afternoon/early evening. When excited the owl pops its head and body up and down. These little owls hunt rodents and small birds, but also eat insects, larvae and snails. For birding sites have a look at this page
